Professional Standards of Dress

What carers wear, why it matters, and how we balance professionalism with practicality — from clinical areas to infection-prevention rules.

Section 01

Introduction

A professional appearance builds trust and confidence in our services. This policy outlines expectations for all staff regarding dress code and personal presentation.

Section 02

Why we have a dress code

  • Professional image: We want to project a professional and caring image to service users, residents, families, and the public.
  • Safety and hygiene: Following these guidelines ensures compliance with health and safety regulations and infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols.

Section 03

General principles

  • Clean and tidy: Clothing should be clean, ironed (if applicable), and free of wrinkles or stains.
  • Appropriate for role: Dress should be suitable for your specific duties.
  • Safe and comfortable: Clothing should allow for safe and comfortable movement.
  • Respectful: Attire should be respectful of the workplace and service user environment.

Section 04

Additional guidelines

  • Jewellery: Minimise jewellery worn. In clinical areas, remove all jewellery except a plain wedding band.
  • Name badges: Wear your name badge visibly at all times unless there is a safety concern.
  • Hair: Keep hair neat and tidy. In clinical areas, tie back long hair to prevent contact with clothing or service users.
  • Nails: Maintain clean and short nails. Avoid false nails and nail polish in clinical areas.
  • Shoes: Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes with good grip, appropriate for the work environment.
  • Perfumes and deodorants: Use minimal fragrances to avoid sensitivities.
  • Religious clothing: Discuss reasonable accommodations for religious attire with your line manager.

Section 05

Uniforms

If your role requires a uniform, follow these additional guidelines:

  • Cleanliness: Change uniforms after each shift and immediately if visibly soiled.
  • Proper fit: Uniforms should fit properly and allow for movement.
  • Replacement: Report any worn, damaged, or discoloured uniforms for replacement.

Section 06

Enforcement

We encourage self-compliance with this policy. If concerns arise, managers will address them privately and supportively. Continued non-compliance may lead to disciplinary action under the Conduct and Capabilities Policy.

Section 07

Review

This policy is reviewed monthly by the Baton Care Advisory Council on the first Thursday of each month, and revised in flight if legislation, We Are Care policy, or registration requirements change.
